Best Scalloped Potatoes

Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Slice the Potatoes: Thinly slice the potatoes using a sharp knife or a mandoline for uniformity. Aim for about 1/8 inch thick for the best texture.
Step 2: Sauté the Onions and Garlic
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 3: Layer the Ingredients
In a greased baking dish (about 9×13 inches), layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom.
Sprinkle half of the sautéed onion and garlic mixture evenly over the potatoes.
Add half of the shredded cheese on top of the onion mixture.
Season gently with salt and pepper to taste.
Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onion, and cheese.
Step 4: Add the Cream
Pour the Heavy Cream: Once your layers are complete, pour 2 cups of heavy cream evenly over the top, allowing it to seep through the layers.
If desired, sprinkle fresh thyme over the top for an added herby touch.
